
Geneva Poe Griffin, 80, passed away on Monday, September 8, 2014 at the home of her eldest son, Melvin Gene Griffin and his wife, Sandy Pollard Griffin. Geneva was born on September 28, 1933 in Montgomery County, daughter of the late Manley Austin Poe and Ola Bowden Poe.
After high school, Geneva moved to Williamston and began work as a nurse at Brown’s Hospital, where she cared for many patients, including servicemen just returning from the Korean War. It was at the hospital that she met and, in September of 1954, married Melvin Hyman Griffin, a veteran of the war. Melvin predeceased her in March of 2012. Together, they had three sons and made their home near Everetts. Geneva and Melvin loved baseball and shared their passion for the sport with their three sons, always cheering them on during their games. Geneva and Melvin co-owned and operated Griffin’s Shoe Store in Robersonville for twenty-seven years, retiring in 1999.
Geneva, affectionately called “Poe” by her many friends, is survived by son, Melvin Gene Griffin and wife, Sandy, son, Richard Lawrence Griffin and wife, Regina, son, Thomas Lee Griffin and wife, Angie, grandchildren Becky, Melissa, Courtney, Brandon, Joshua, Jessica, Ian and Allie. Also surviving Geneva is her sister, Grace P. Cox and brother, Sam Poe.
Geneva will be remembered by her friends and family as a kind, gentle and loving mother and proud “Grandma”.
Visitation will be held at Biggs Funeral Home in Robersonville from 5 pm – 7 pm on Wednesday, September 10, 2014. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 11, 2014 conducted by Rev. Lee Hendricks at Martin Memorial Gardens, Everetts, NC.
The family would like to thank the hospice care personnel at AseraCare for the loving attention Geneva received prior to being called home. Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society
