Sarah Virginia Knight Grantham, born May 31, 1930, passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Jackson, Mississippi on February 24, 2011. Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson on Saturday February 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 12:30pm till 2:00 pm at the church. Interment will be in Lakewood Memorial P. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home Highland Colony is in charge of arrangements.
Sarah graduated from Taylorsville, Mississippi High School going on to Mississippi College and eventually Ole Miss where she majored in Home Economics. At Ole Miss, she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and was a teacher at the Staff Kindergarten School on campus. While at Ole Miss, she met and married B. E. “Corky” Grantham, Jr. They enjoyed over fifty years of marriage until his death in 2001. After graduating from Ole Miss, she and Corky lived in Washington D.C., Springfield, MO and Detroit, MI before moving back to Jackson to raise their family.
Sarah was a selfless servant to her family, friends and her church. A beloved mother, sister, grandmother, cousin, friend and neighbor, she loved her kitchen and had a gift for hospitality. She also enjoyed the outdoors and took great pleasure in maintaining her yard, green house and flower beds. Sarah was a homemaker known for her culinary skills and beautiful flower arrangements that she loved to share with family and friends. Sarah was a long term member of First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Mississippi and active in a number of ministries within the church including PRO’s, Circle, the Flower Arrangement Committee, and Vacation Bible School and was a Life Member of Women of the Church. She was also an active member of the One O’clock Luncheon Club and a founding member of the First Friday Bridge Group.
Sarah was preceded in death by her loving husband B. E. “Corky” Grantham, Jr., her father Curtis Colu Knight, her mother Lucile Risher Knight, two brothers, Curtis and an infant son, and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, B.E. “Tanks” Grantham, Sr. and Hazel Grantham. She is survived by her son and daughter in-law Edward and Cindy Grantham of Canton, MS., her daughter and son-in-law Sally and Terry Caves of Laurel, MS., and her son and daughter-in-law Curt and Cindy Grantham in Charlotte, NC as well as four grandsons, Risher and Christopher Caves and John and Carter Grantham. In addition, she is survived by her brother, Robert Terrell Knight, Sr. (Linda) of Baton Rouge, LA and 2 sisters-in-law, Judy Allen (Clyde) of Kingsville, TX and Pat Guion of Plano, TX as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Orchard and Stay Home Health & Hospice for their kindness and support in caring for Sarah as well as her doctors, George Patton and Ruth Fredericks. They especially want to thank the ladies who were with her around the clock for the past year providing such loving care and attention.
