James Vernon Smith, Sr., 78, went to be with the Lord on May 2, 2011 st the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Wednesday at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland. A 10 AM visitation will be held at First Baptist Church Madison, followed by funeral services at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Parkway Memorial Cemetery immediately after the service.
Vernon was an Honor’s Graduate from Mississippi College and a graduate of the University of Virginia Consumer Banking School in Charlottesville, VA. His banking career began with Deposit Guaranty National Bank, later with American Bank, The Bank of Vicksburg and BancorpSouth. He retired a Senior Loan Officer and Board Secretary for the Mississippi Business Finance Corp.
Vernon also proudly served in the U. S. Army and Army National Guard. He was proud of his service to his country.
In retirement Vernon loved playing golf, gardening, but mostly spending time with his family and church family.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Mal Ennis Smith and Lavelle Littlejohn Smith, and a brother Wayne. He is survived by his loving wife Alice.
He is also survived by son James (Jimmy) V. Smith, Jr. of Hattiesburg, and daughter Kristi Karol Smith of Madison. Grandson James (Trey) V. Smith, III, his wife Amy and granddaughters Maddie and Bella of Weslaco, TX, Grandson Hampton “Kyle” Smith of Madison. He is also survived by a sister, Mable Claire Woodward of Louisville, MS , a brother Dr. Eddie M. Smith of Decatur, MS and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
