Henry was born on December 19, 1946, in Jackson, Mississippi, to Carr and Vadie Mae Black. From an early age, Henry loved to spend time outdoors, participating in Boy Scouts (earning the rank of Eagle Scout) and earnestly trying to catch animals in the backyard, claiming even that he once caught a hummingbird. Following his graduation from Murrah High School, Henry attended the University of Mississippi and University of Mississippi School of Law. Henry also served his country in the U.S. Army and fought in the Vietnam War with the 101st Airborne Division. For his meritorious actions during Vietnam, Henry was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
In 1975, Henry began his 36-year career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District. He became District Counsel in 1987, and served with distinction in that capacity until his retirement in 2011, earning an induction into the Gallery of Distinguished Employees. Henry loved the Corps, and built many lasting friendships and mentorships during his time there. Upon retirement, Henry volunteered for many years with Mission First, providing legal services to underserved communities in the Jackson area.
Most close to Henry’s heart were his family and friends. Always a selfless servant, Henry was fiercely devoted to his family and loved them unconditionally and with constant grace and humility. On August 17, 1974, Henry married the love of his life, Brenda, and they had three children: Randy, Stan, and Megan. Henry was a staple on the soccer and baseball/softball fields, even coaching all three for many years. Henry was a devoted husband and father and never missed a game or any other event for his wife and children. His most fun role in recent years was that of Papa, where Henry proved a gentle grandfather that was happiest with a grandkid running around. Henry also loved hunting, fishing, genealogy, and enjoyed watching birds in his backyard. Henry was quick with a laugh and always had historical tidbits to tell. His wit and stories will be sorely missed, as well as his sound guidance.
Henry was preceded in death by his father Carr, mother Vadie Mae, and brother Marion. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Brenda, his three children, Randy Black, Stan Black (Emily), and Megan Ross (Jason), his four grandchildren, Dylan, Samuel, Susannah, and River, and several other family members.
