Anne Williams Booth died the morning of May 9, 2024. She was born July 28, 1931 in Chattanooga Tennessee to Doris G and J Frederick Williams, and raised in Opelika Alabama. She was a graduate of Sophie Newcomb College (Tulane University), receiving a BA in History in 1953. Following marriage and the birth of a son, her family moved from New Orleans to Jackson, where she had lived since 1958.
Anne was an energetic and committed person who gave her complete energy and talent to all the she did. She was a devoted mother who always understood when parenting required persuasion, resolution, toughness and letting go. As a teacher in the Jackson Public Schools for 24 years she taught history, economics and geography. There are stories too numerous to tell about her years as a teacher at Callaway and Murrah, but if told they would reveal her wit, compassion, love of the profession of teaching, and commitment to her students and school. Well into her her retirement, former students could be found sitting on her front porch in Belhaven talking about their lives and challenges.
She was for 61 years the devoted spouse to her husband Herschel A. Booth, who predeceased her in 2015 and was a member of St. Mathew’s United Methodist Church, formerly Wesley United Methodist Church of Madison Mississippi. Anne is survived by her son, James F. Ted Booth (Virginia) of Jackson, Mississippi, her beloved dog Sally Ann, numerous nieces and nephews and perhaps her greatest legacy, the many former students who remember her as a friend, and inspiration who helped prepare them for the arduous path of living that lay ahead of them. Visitation will occur at St. Mathew’s United Methodist Church at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, May 15, with services following at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to the charity of your choice in her name.
