He was born in West Palm Beach, FL to the late William Randolph Cosby and Lorraine Johnson Cosby. Ran was the eldest of three sons. He grew up in Indianapolis, IN before his family relocated to Richmond, VA. He graduated from John Marshall High School where he was Captain of the Cadet Corps (Company F). One special memory was participating with the Cadet Corps, in a parade honoring the end of WWII. Dignitaries included Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. More recently, Ran was one of the leaders who established the John Marshall Memorial at Hollywood Cemetery. Prior to graduating from Washington & Lee University, he served in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. In 1951, he married Barbara Jayne Bennett, whom he met, at age 14, while studying Latin with her older brother. His first job was with General Electric in Schenectady, NY. In 1954, he returned to Richmond to join the family business - W.G. Cosby Transfer & Storage. For years, it was located across the street from Parker Field which is where the Richmond Braves played and the “legendary” Winnie & Gus sign would light up when players got a hit. He was active in various organizations, including Sertoma, Ruritan, Meals on Wheels, St. Mary’s Episcopal Seniors Group and Southeastern Warehousemen and Movers Association, where he served on the Board and as President. He also coached Little League Baseball. He enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, cooking, watching sports - especially the Atlanta Braves, college football and basketball and Little League Baseball.
He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 55 years Barbara; and his brothers, John M. Cosby and Richard K. Cosby. He is survived by his four children, Connie Shannon, Debbie Riggs (Dean), William R. Cosby, III (Babs), Beth Ann Conner; seven grandchildren, Ryan Sills, Kristin Hill (Tim), Katie Brown (Sam), W. Randy Cosby, IV (Maggie), Bennett Brown, Bethany Brown, Laura Garlow (Mike); six great-grandchildren, Charlie and Wyatt Dorin, Adalyn Brown, Libby Cosby, Grant and Holden Garlow.
