McLAUGHLIN, Laura Thompson Pope, 94, passed away on September 30, 2016. A widow of William Barrett Pope (died in 1982) and later of John Henry McLaughlin (died in 2002), she was the fourth of five children of Elbert Green and Knoxie Stinson Thompson, of Birmingham, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Helen Ruby Crocker and Mary Elizabeth McLemore; and her brother, John W. Thompson. Survivors include her son, Barrett Erskine Pope and his wife, Patti Cheadle Pope; grandchildren, Margaret "Maggie" Powell Pope and William Barrett Pope II; stepdaughters, Ellen McLaughlin Carrico (Thomas) and Ann McLaughlin Loving (Charles); stepson, John W. McLaughlin (Karen); sister, Peggy Thompson Kimbrough (James); and numerous nieces, nephews and stepgrandchildren. She was a 1945 graduate of St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing in Birmingham and a member of the Navy Cadet Nurse Corps during the latter part of the Second World War. She then served as a nurse on the Silver Comet line of the Seaboard Airline Railroad Company for several years. She returned to work in the late 1960s as a registered nurse on the orthopaedic surgery floor of St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond. She was a long-time congregant of River Road Church, Baptist, where she was a member of the Board of Deacons, the Lydia Sunday School class, and WMU. The family wishes to express its appreciation to Drs. Richard Gergoudis, Gansevoort Dunnington, Paul Bullock Jr., Bruce Cook; and their respective staffs, as well as the staffs of Spring Arbor of Richmond and At Home Care Hospice for their exemplary care. Her memorial service will be private on a date to be determined. Arrangements under the direction of Woody Funeral Home-Parham, Richmond, VA.
