Obituary of Joy Anne Beam Beam Daniel
Joy Anne Beam Daniel, DANIEL,Joy Anne Beam, a Richmond artist, died March 31, 2010, at the age of 82. She was the widow of John Moncure Daniel Jr. She is survived by a daughter, Anne Daniel; son, John M. Daniel III, MD, and his wife, Princess Daniel, all of Richmond; two grandsons, John M. Daniel IV, a student at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Alex Daniel, a student at Duke University. Mrs. Daniel grew up in Shelby, North Carolina, along with her beloved sister and brother, Jo LeGrand and John Beam; she had three stepsiblings, Sissy, Kitty and David. She contracted polio at the age of 13, before the development of the vaccine. She went to Warm Springs, Georgia, for rehabilitation where she came away with the belief and knowledge that she could do anything she wanted in her life, despite her handicap. Mrs. Daniel began drawing when she was three years old and never stopped. "I would draw on the back of my daddy's checkbook to keep me quiet in church." She took her love of drawing and painting to Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she majored in Fine Arts. After graduation in 1947, she attended Richmond Professional Institute, now VCU, where she took advertising courses and became an advertising artist. She was the only female advertising artist at the Atlanta Journal and Constitution newspapers for four years. After marrying in 1951, she continued to work as a freelance artist. In 1960, a friend persuaded Mrs. Daniel to give up teaching art classes in her basement to concentrate on her artwork once again. Since that time she has been an exhibiting member of several local art groups, including Tuckahoe Artists Association as well as a past president of Bon Air Artists Association. Mrs. Daniel was an award-winning member of the Virginia, Georgia and Baltimore Watercolor Societies. Mrs. Daniel's artwork included pastels, oils and fabulous watercolors that depicted landscapes, flowers, sailboats, birds and other animals. She used vivid colors, and her work showed her soaring spirit. She was an accomplished portrait artist as well. Mrs. Daniel's work has been exhibited in juried shows at the Virginia Museum, the Chrysler Museum, the Winston-Salem Gallery of Contemporary Art, the Fayetteville Museum and the Fredericksburg Center for Creative Arts. Her work has been included in the annual Occasion for the Arts Festival in Williamsburg, Arts around the Lake at the University of Richmond, as well as Arts in the Park. She has exhibited in several one-artist shows in Richmond, Northern Virginia and in North Carolina. Mrs. Daniel loved people, life, art, flowers and most of all her family. She attended every tennis match, swim meet and piano recital for not only her two children but also her two grandchildren. She listened to piano recitals by cell phone when she was no longer able to attend in person. Her favorite recital pieces were duets played by her daughter, Anne; and grandson, Alex. She passed along her can do attitude to her children and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed. In keeping with her wishes, she will have a private interment at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, beside her husband of 55 years. There will be a memorial service at St. James Episcopal Church at 1205 West Franklin Street on Friday, April 9, at 12 noon. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to St. James Music and Mission programs. Online condolences may be made at woodyfuneralhomeparham.com.
