Jim is survived by his wife, Mary Essa; and his children, Jonathan Essa of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Jennifer Essa of Richmond, Va. Jim will also be remembered by his sister, Linda McMurry (Warren) of Wilmington, N.C.; his brothers, Thomas Essa and Michael Essa of Greensboro, N.C.; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and best friend of 50 years, Joseph Lambeth of Kernersville, N.C. Jim was devoted to his family and always put them first.
He will be remembered for his generosity, playful sense of humor, his love of the game of golf, football and scratch off tickets from the lottery. Jim was known for his story-telling, his hankering for tasty foods, coffee, midnight snacks and his priceless life advice such as "It is what it is...until it isn't" and "Don't take any wooden nickels." The love Jim's family and friends had for him will remain forever in a special place in our hearts.
There will be a celebration of Jim's life at 2 p.m. on November 4 at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 North Parham Rd. The family will host a reception following the service.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in his honor to the American Kidney Fund.
