Horace E. "Smitty" Smith

Horace E. “Smitty” Smith, 83, of Sandston, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Randolph Smith and Virginia Shell; twin brother, Harold Smith; brother, Ernest Smith; and grandchildren, Jennifer and Christie. Horace grew up in the Methodist Children’s Home and was a lifelong member of Providence United Methodist Church. He served in the U. S. Air Force in Tripoli, Africa. Horace was active within his community, helping to build the Antioch Recreation Association’s pool. He was a quiet source of comfort to those who had fallen ill. Horace enjoyed wood working and was an avid fisherman. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years, Carole Lawrence Smith; children, Handy E. Smith (Patricia), Angela D. Shoe, and Bradley P. Smith (Valerie); grandchildren, Jesse, Chase, Bradley, Carly, Natalie, Cameron, Zachary, and Joseph; and great granddaughter, Kaitlyn. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, at Providence United Methodist Church, 4001 New Kent Hwy., Quinton, Va. 23141, with a visitation one hour prior. A private inurnment will be held in the church cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to Providence United Methodist Church.
