Fred Preston Powell, 87, of Powhatan, passed peacefully on Friday, January 19, 2018. He was born in Marion, Va., to the late Otis and Ethel Powell. Fred was also predeceased by siblings, James, Mae, Douglas, Ditt, Randy, Roy Clark, and Phyllis Ann.
Fred is survived by his wife of 66 years, Kiyoko “Kay,” whom he married in 1951 at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, while serving in the U.S. Army. He is also survived by daughter, Bonnie Lee (Caesar); sister, Rose Gillespie; and half-brother, Robert Powell (Shelby).
Fred drove for Greyhound for 24 years and worked for the Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries. After retirement, he enjoyed his lifetime hunting and fishing license, farming, and beekeeping. He was known for his local honey in Powhatan County.
The family will receive visitors, Saturday, January 27, 2018, from 4 until 6 p.m. at Bennett & Barden, 3215 Anderson Hwy in Powhatan. Fred will be laid to rest at Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Fred’s name to the Salvation Army of Central Virginia.
