After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1949, she went to work for
A. R. Tiller. She married in 1953 and was a faithful and devoted wife and mother.
With four children in a span of 10 years, she always joked that she was a Room
Mother for 20 years. As thegrandchildren appeared, she was an amazing “Nana”.
She always had time for them and made sure that they felt special around her. The
saying, “If Mom says ‘NO’, just ask ‘Nana’” truly applied to Betty. The love of God
and her family was of most importance in her life. Betty had a deep faith and relied
heavily on her Christian upbringing and teachings. She studied the Bible and was
deeply committed to Jesus Christ. She was a member of Second Baptist Church,
but as her mobility became limited, she watched her services on television.
Betty enjoyed playing bridge and was quite an adept card player. One of her
passions was home decorating. She had a marvelous vision for space and design
and loved to implement those skills. She had a great sense of humor, and yet she
always knew the right thing to say in a situation. She entertained effortlessly and
made guests feel warm and welcomed. Hospitality could have been her middle name!
