Dorothy’s roots were in Orange County, where she was raised. Her humble upbringing as one of 8 children gave her a foundation of gratefulness in all things. Her mother ensured that her children attended Rhoadesville Baptist Church, initiating lifelong dedication of service to her Lord. She never tired of hearing family stories, which brought her great joy. Following graduation from Unionville High School in 1950, Dorothy married James W. Garrett of Beaverdam, and moved to Richmond. Dorothy was a dedicated WMU leader at church for many years, promoting mission activities. Her servant attitude was well known, and no task was too small or great to carry out. Dorothy loved to visit the sick, spending hours on the phone ministering to those who were homebound, lonesome, or needed encouragement.
