Obituary of Cynthia Ann Thomas Funk
FUNK, Cynthia Thomas, of Richmond, Va., while holding the hands of her family, peacefully and with dignity and love passed into the Hands of God May 20, 2018. Born in Lynchburg, Va., she was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Helen Thomas; and her brother, Edgar A. Thomas Jr. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Mahlon G. Funk Jr.; her sons, Mahlon G. Funk III and Ashly J. Funk (Karen); her sister, Patricia T. Shea; and her two precious treasures, grandchildren, Camden and Nolan. A graduate of Lynchburg College, with Masters in Education, Cindy was passionate about children, as evident by the innumerable lives she touched throughout her years as a reading specialist and teaching 2nd through 5th grades from Bedford to Williamsburg - most recently at Varina Elementary. As a faithful and longtime member of Laurel Hill UMC, she enjoyed another passion, music, in the chancel and bell choirs. Cindy was a true lady in each and every wonderful sense of that word. She always will be remembered by her family and all who knew her as a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who lived life to the fullest. Always welcoming and the epitome of hospitality and kindness, she will be greatly missed, but will always and forever be with and in those whom her life touched, especially all the many children who benefitted so greatly by her teaching, mentoring, caring and love. Services will be held at Laurel Hill UMC, 1919 New Market Rd., Henrico, Va., Saturday, May 26, at 11 a.m. with interment immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, The Friends of Barnabas Foundation medical missions (helping the children of Honduras - one child at a time), P.O. Box 4804, Midlothian, Va. 23112, or the charity of your preference. Online codolences received at nelsenrichmond.com.
