Betty was born on August 28, 1934 to Walter and Lila Hodges in Norfolk, Virginia. Formerly a Naval Intelligence Analyst, Alexandria Public Schools employee, and owner of The Country Cousin, Betty is remembered fondly for her ability to love passionately, her fierce and tenacious spirit, and her never-ending compassion. Despite health issues and personal adversity, Betty always doted on her family and friends. Known as Mama Betty at Brookdale Senior Living, she was a much beloved resident whose spunkiness left a lasting impression. She was a fierce animal advocate and supporter of many animal rescues and organizations. She will be missed forever by her daughter Jeanne and her two granddaughters.
Betty is survived by her brother, Walter Hodges, Jr; her daughter, Jeanne Gentry (Patrick); her two granddaughters, Ashley Hunt (Tim) and Kelsey Gentry; her great grandson, Aiden Hunt; her niece, Cheri Warren (John). She is predeceased by her mother, Lila Hodges; her father, Walter Hodges, Sr.; and her beloved dog, Birdie, who has been waiting patiently at the rainbow bridge for her to come home.
A memorial service will be held on Monday. February 7, 2022 at 2pm at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road, Richmond, VA 23229. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family kindly asks for condolences in the form of donations to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, an organization whose mission was very near and dear to Betty's heart.
