Ms. Terecia Jake Hartwell was a modest woman, quiet and observant in her ways. She was determined with the kind of “stick to it” attitude that earned the respect of all who knew her. Realistic about life, she was always at the ready, prepared to take on responsibility.
Her parents were Amos and Fannie Jake. She was brought up to be self-confident and dependable. These were traits that would serve her well throughout her life.
Terecia was raised with eight older siblings. She had four sisters and four brothers and was constantly involved in activities with them. Terecia and her siblings may have had the typical rivalries while growing up but they were always consistently loyal to their family.
Terecia was blessed with two children, two sons, Johnnie Haywood and Louis Burrell, Sr. She was a good parent to them, always firm yet fair in her dealings with them. She was also blessed with ten grand-children; Lisa Haywood, Mary Etta Haywood, Sherston Haywood, Theresa Haywood, Louis Burrell, Todd C. Burrell, Jar'que L. Burrell, Lovett Moore, Pam Moore, and Rickey Brown.
Terecia greatly enjoyed what she did for a living. She was skilled at working effectively in small groups and in one-on-one situations as well as handling solo assignments efficiently. She was an efficient worker, one who paid careful attention to detail, allowing sufficient time to complete one task before moving on to the next. Her primary occupation was a Home Health Aide. She was employed for over 70 years. She worked hard to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done.
Terecia liked to experience things first-hand as well as learn about them. This trait carried over into her hobbies, where she was very methodical in how she organized her activities and categorized things. Her favorite pursuits were cooking and caring for her family, passionately.
She also found some pleasure in sports in her younger years. Tops on her list was baseball especially during the Willie Mays era when he was with the Giants.
Terecia was dedicated and devoted to her faith. She was a member of Elisabeth Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond, CA for many, many years. During that time, she was a faithful, committed lay member.
Terecia enjoyed traveling and taking vacations including long road trips to her hometown of Shaw, Mississippi, as well as, Missouri, Illinois, and Louisiana.
She was a lover of animals and cherished her two Chihuahua’s named Tippie and Lucky.
Ms. Terecia Jake Hartwell is survived by one son, Louis Burrell, daughter in law, Opal Haywood, ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and extended family friends.
A homegoing celebration for Terecia will be held Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Fuller Funerals, 3100 Cutting Blvd, Richmond, CA 94804.
