After relocating to California, Charlie attended newly integrated El Cerrito High School, and was the only African American person on the honor roll. After graduation, she attended City College of San Francisco, and later met and married Willard (Bill) Wynne. They had one son, Anthony, and later took in and raised two little orphans (who had been adopted by her sister, Florence) after her sister's tragic death. She was very close with all three of her children.
Charlie worked 35 years for the Welfare Department of Alameda County, where she was a top level clerk for the "Special Investigations" Unit and then retired. She enjoyed retirement, and as an avid reader, was never bored.
Charlie was well known for always helping others. One of her childhood nicknames was "Good Deed Dottie" after a comic book character. Charlie never met a stranger and was very friendly, always smiling. SHe had a way of making others happy. Charlie was a giver and giving gifts was her 'love language' and she had a lot of it to give, constantly.
Charlie was called home to be with the Lord just weeks before her 96th birthday. She is survived by her brother, Charles (Bubba) Freeman, Jr; son, Anthony Wynne (Gwendolyn); niece and nephew she raised, Sam Mack and Allison Moore; grandsons: DuMaurier Wynne (Courtney), Eric McCray and Paul Thrower; granddaughters: Amahni Wynne and Brittany Thrower; and great grandsons and granddaughters, nieces and nephews, and many, many friends.
A bright light has been extinguished, but for almost 96 years, that light warmed the hearts of many, many people. Charlie Maw will be sorely missed.
A Celebration of Life was held in honor of Mrs. Charlie Mae Wynne on Thursday, September 19, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Fuller Funerals located at 3100 Cutting Blvd in the city of Richmond, CA 94804 | 510-237-5473. A Fallen Limb
A limb has fallen from the family tree.
I keep hearing a voice that says,
“Grieve not for me.
Remember the best times,
the laughter, the song.
The good life I lived
while I was strong.
Continue my heritage,
I’m counting on you.
Keep smiling and surely
the sun will shine through.
My mind is at ease,
my soul is at rest.
Remembering all,
how I truly was blessed.
Continue traditions,
no matter how small.
Go on with your life,
don’t worry about falls.
I miss you all dearly,
so keep up your chin.
Until the day comes
we’re together again.”
