James Leroy O'Kelley, affectionately known as Leroy to his Chico family, was born on June 4, 1938, in Chico, Texas, and passed away on October 30, 2024. He graduated as Salutatorian of his class at Chico High School, then went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1958 - 1962. During his time in the military, James Leroy would earn the rank of Corporal and was stationed in Hawaii and Camp Lejeune.
James Leroy married Mary O'Kelley, the love of his life, on February 5, 1966. Over the span of their 57 year marriage, together they raised a beautiful family and made memories that will last a lifetime. James Leroy dedicated 27 years of his life to his career working for the United States Postal Service until his well-deserved retirement. His dedication to his faith led him to serve as a Deacon at the Jupiter Road Baptist Church for many years. His life was a beautiful testament to faith, family, and a deep commitment to serving others.
James Leroy loved traveling with Mary and friends going on many cruises and fun trips. Their favorite trip was Disneyworld where he and Mary celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with all of their children and grandchildren. His family and friends will always remember him for his caring demeanor, his strong Christian faith, and being a loving family-man and doting grandfather.
James Leroy is survived by his loving wife, Mary O'Kelley; son, Steve O'Kelley (Paige); daughter, Kim Hays (Gary); and grandchildren, Kennedy O'Kelley, Brendan O'Kelley, and Garrett Hays, Justin Hays, Ryan Hays; sisters, Lois Freeman, Geneva Anderson, Linda O'Dell, and Elizabeth O'Kelley and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Florilla O'Kelley; sisters, Flora Morgan and Velma O'Kelley; and brother, James O'Kelley.
In remembering James Leroy, we celebrate a life woven with faith, family bonds, and heartfelt service to others—a legacy that will live on in the hearts and minds of those he touched.
