For the past decades, she was a courageous widow who single handedly raised this uncommonly large number of children. With the help of her older brother, she successfully embarked on a journey from Vietnam to the United States with all her 17 children by her side. She provided each child with a strong foundation, work ethic and independence to pursue their own happiness and success.
She was an influential family matriarch who taught her children and grandchildren familial values. She had strong Chinese roots stemming from her parents’ origins that she passed down to her children and grandchildren. This included the significance of family and the celebrating the traditions of Chinese New Year, Full Moon Festival, wedding ceremonies and many more.
She was also a remarkable chef. Her family and friends loved her amazing home-cooked meals. She would serve the entree dishes in two plates to tailor to her children’s preferences: fish and without fish, mushroom and without mushroom. She took pleasure in welcoming her grandchildren’s visits with banh beo or customized lap cheong bao. She involved her grandchildren in the kitchen at a young age, teaching them to wrap wontons or make har gows. She enjoyed sharing her recipes and cooking techniques with anyone who asked.
She was always highly respected for her kindness and honesty by those that knew her. Her characteristic legacy will forever be remembered and lived by her family.
