John Joseph Kennedy, III was a true New Yorker who also embraced the adventure of the American West. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, son of first-generation Americans, he was always proud of his Polish-Irish immigrant heritage.
John’s military career began when he answered his country’s call to duty. Before deployment to the Vietnam War, he travelled through Fort Lewis and fell in love with Washington State. This would lead him back to the Pacific Northwest after the war. John was exceptionally close to his mother Sophie and younger twin sisters, Deborah and Denise. Their loving care would help him fully recover from significant injury sustained during his service overseas. Upon recovery, John moved to the Seattle area. Still drawn to a life of service, he continued his military career, enlisting in the Washington Army National Guard. He served with distinction for over 35 years, achieving the rank of Sergeant Major.
He met his wife Ann, the love of his life, while attending Seattle Community College. John and Ann married and raised three children Sean, Sarah, and Laura. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
A voracious reader, John was never without a book. No subject escaped his interest, although he was particularly fond of history. He could easily read a thousand pages in just over a week. His passion for music meant he always had a song top of mind, often whistling aloud. With the heart of a naturalist, he was also greatly influenced by and found solace in nature. He loved the menagerie of pets he had throughout his life: numerous dogs, cats, horses, and fish.
John was a loving husband, father, and brother. He was a devoted soldier and friend, a mentor and a leader.
He is survived by his wife Ann, his son Sean with wife Dawn, his daughter Sarah with wife Stephanie, his daughter Laura, his grandson Vince, his sisters Deborah and Denise, extended family, and fellow soldiers.
John’s life and that of his family was significantly impacted by heart disease. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The American Heart Association in John’s name.
