Mom was born on April 23rd, 1932, during the Great Depression period. A country farm girl at heart, she already knew the values of faith in one’s self, faith in God, determination, hard work and “make do with what you have” instilled in her at a very young age. “If you ain’t got something, make something else do.” She readily accepted the challenge and responsibility of being the eldest. Committing herself to helping to care for her younger siblings, as well perform routine chores and laboured long hours in the fields, with her parents on the Homestead.
Mom grew up in and around the town of Dysart, SK. As a teen, she worked in Griffons Store. After acquiring her grade 9 education, and with the help of her father, she was introduced to the “Big City” of Regina. Thus, beginning her work career at Eaton’s, where she worked and managed many departments including Heavy Hardware and Fine China.
At Eaton’s, was the second time in her life she met her future husband. A handsome, confident, persistent, long-legged man named Maurice. Their first-time meeting was by chance at a friend’s home, Thanksgiving weekend in 1949. Mom and dad began a courtship (and as dad would say, “Two different worlds came together”). Velma (mom) was a dedicated, hands-on mother to 4 growing children. Continually caring, nurturing, encouraging and teaching each one to be a contributing family member while also being an individual. She had the ability to recognize the weakness, as well as the potential in each one of us. Mom readily offered her guidance along the way and if she felt she wasn’t the best resource, she would continue to help you with your search.
Mom wanted to contribute more to our family and help Dad out at home. She was a born salesperson with a welcoming smile and full of energy. She began demonstrating food goods at stores, selling tons of product. From there she continued to improve herself and build self-confidence by taking home-study courses to achieve her Real Estate sales license. Mom embarked on a 25- year, successful career in her community.
Velma was truly devoted to her Catholic faith. Dad and her were parishioners of St. Cecelia Church for 62 years. Mom was a member of the CWL for as many years. She actively practiced service to others, delivering communion to the sick for over 20 years, as well as serving on the Parish Council. In addition, Mom loved to sing in the church choir.
Velma will be fondly remembered for her genuine acts of kindness and her willingness to help out a friend or stranger. She never forgot her humble beginnings and routinely put others first and herself second.
Twinkling green eyes, glistening red hair, the colour yellow, song birds chirping, afternoon tea and daily prayers -
