Growing up in Regina, Steve attended Thomson School Elementary and then Central Collegiate High School. He completed his B.Sc. at the University of Saskatchewan in 1951, soon after being hired as a representative of the biochemistry laboratory at the Regina General Hospital. In 1959, he won the Fisher Scientific Co. Award in Biochemistry for his paper “Experiences with the Dehydrogenase and Transaminase Enzyme Procedures” which was then published in the Canadian Journal of Medical Technology 1961. He completed his PhD in Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Alberta in 1964, the only Saskatchewan resident to do so that spring. Steve returned to the Regina General Hospital where he worked as the Director of Biochemistry Laboratory until his retirement. He was highly regarded and well respected in his field of study as well as in the community. Steve will always be well remembered for his gentle, kind soul and his big smile – never taking a bad picture. He loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed playing Bridge, painting, wood working, curling and puttering around the house fixing this and that as well as working outside in the garden. Steve was an active member at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. He and his wife, Lucia, were season ticket holders for the Regina Symphony Orchestra, Globe Theatre, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. After his retirement he and Lucia enjoyed travelling all around the world. Some of their favourite spots included South America, Galapagos Islands, China, Australia, and New Zealand. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, building snow bears and forts, teaching badminton and Ping-Pong, and playing Legos. Steve was very much loved and will be dearly missed. He is finally with his true love, Lucia, and she with her Schatz.
