San Carlos
Joseph Masetti passed away peacefully on September 15, 2018 at the age of 76.
Joe was born on April 19, 1942 in Capannori, Lucca, Italy. When he was 13 years old, he came to the United States with his mother Anna, sister and brother to reunite with his father Vasco, who had come to the U.S. earlier to prepare a home in a new country for his family.
On a blind date, Joe met the love of his life, Diane, they were married in 1963. They bought a home in San Carlos in 1965 where they raised their two sons, Joseph Masetti Jr. and James Joseph Masetti. Joe worked for 42 years as a small-crane operator, he also was a part-time bartender, an amazing soccer coach, bowler, fisherman, and bocce ball player. Joe was lovingly referred to as “Nonno” by his five grandchildren, Tony and Sarah, children of Joe Jr. and Diana, and Katie, Lauryn and Ryan, children of Jim and Susan.
Joe was an active member of the Peninsula Social Club and the Sons of Italy and also was a long time member of the San Mateo Elks Lodge. For many years, Joe’s Christmas light displays, most of which were handmade by Joe, brightened San Carlos around the holidays, leading to several awards as “Best Light Show” and “Most Creative” in San Carlos.
Joe is survived by his wife, Diane, his children and their spouses, Joe Jr. and Diana, Jim and Susan, his five grandchildren, Tony, Sarah, Katie, Lauryn and Ryan, his sister and brother-in-law, Alberta and Donald Delnevo, his brother and sister-in-law, Ned and Tonia Masetti, and many nephews and nieces and their children, all of whom will greatly miss his smile, sense of humor and his endearing Italian accent.
A Vigil will be held at Redwood Chapel, 847 Woodside Rd., Redwood City, on Thursday, 9/27, 7:00PM, with visitation beginning at 5:00PM. A funeral Mass will be held 9/28, 10AM, St. Charles Church, 880 Tamarack Ave., San Carlos. Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Los Altos. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be made in his memory to the Serra High School Scholarship Fund. Please mail donations to Serra High School, 451 West 20th Ave, San Mateo 94403 and note Joseph Masetti on your check.
