Kevin Alexander Oaks, beloved husband, step-father, son, brother, uncle and friend, departed this world on November 23, 2022 at his home in Redmond, Washington. Surrounded by people who love him and with his heart full of song, he let go of a long battle with cancer. As a child, Kevin lived all over the country with his family until they settled in Renton, Washington, where he graduated from Liberty High School. He went on to earn a degree from Renton College and became a successful programmer for various companies on the east side of King County. Among his many loves were the Seahawks, the outdoors and, perhaps above all, music. Especially anything by Bruce Springsteen.
In 2013, he and his wife, Makia Oaks, purchased SoulFood Coffeehouse in Redmond, WA where they shine a light on local musicians, artists and poets over a damn fine cup of coffee. With his quiet ways, big heart and guitar in hand, he held space as long as he could, keeping a light on through the pandemic, even in sickness. He is remembered for his music, his wicked wit, his commitment to his family, friends, and community. A one of a kind, a knight among men, and one of the best brothers in the whole world he has left our hearts both full and broken in the same moment.
He is survived by his wife, Makia Oaks, his step-son Samuel Jurenka, his mother, Lucy Oaks, his four siblings and their spouses; Bryant Oaks (Priscilla), Michael Oaks, Richard Oaks (Pattie Pringle-Oaks), Deborah Oaks (Phil Bennett) and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial is being planned for December 18th to celebrate his life and will be held at Soulfood Coffee House, details to come.
