Patricia "Patty" Ann Benton 2.11.1944 - 1.1.2022
Patty Benton, 77, of Redding passed away peacefully of natural causes on Saturday January 1, 2022. Patty was born Patricia Ann Young to Jack and Nora Young on February 11, 1944 in Eureka, CA. The Young family moved from Eureka to Redding in 1946 when Patty was just 2 years old. Patty was the second oldest of the Young family of 5 children. Patty attended St. Joseph's Catholic grammar school and graduated from Redding's Enterprise High School in 1962. With a passion to follow in her mother's footsteps as a medical nurse, Patty started taking nursing classes at Shasta College while attending high school, and graduated as an LVN II in 1963 from Shasta College. Years later Patty received her RN license with honors.
Immediately following Patty's graduation, she started her medical career at Mercy Medical Center in the Pediatric ward then later as an ER nurse. Patty also was head nurse for the private practice of Dr. Fredrick Cox (GP), and later with Dr. David Hankin (orthopedics). In 1977, she accepted an offer to join Redding Memorial Hospital's orthopedic department. In the early 1980's Patty was promoted to run the hospital's GI Endoscopy Department. A few years later Dr. Malcolm Hill recruited Patty to design and be the Administrator for the Redding Endoscopy Center, where she finished her career and retired from in 1998.
Some of the many things Patty enjoyed volunteering for while working in Redding's medical community was coordinating Redding Memorial Hospital's Christmas Employee parties, the Bedpan Olympics, Hospital Picnics, Health Fair and Redding Endoscopy Center's employee children's holiday parties. Patty loved everything about being a nurse, care giver and working with all her fellow colleges.
In 1981 Patty met her soulmate, Jan Benton, while working at Redding Memorial Hospital. Jan was a local CHP and was at the hospital working on a case. They fell in love and were married in April of 1982, barely spending a day apart for the rest of their 39+ marriage. Patty cared for Jan during his final months, never leaving his side until his passing in November, 2021.
Beyond her professional career, Patty enjoyed spending her life with her husband Jan, traveling to exotic places including the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador Rain Forest, Kenya, Costa Rica and many more. In their later years, Patty and Jan enjoyed RV'ing across the US with their friends, fly fishing and white water rafting, cruising the open seas and gardening. Patty loved to garden and her yard demonstrated her beautiful talents.
Patty is survived by her daughter Yvonne Lanterman (Rob), son Steven Scott (Dawn), step son Jay Benton (Carlye), grandchildren: Michele Querin, Shelby Lanterman, Jessica Benton, Aaron Benton (Jennifer) and great grandchild Colton Benton.
Patty is survived by her older sister Roberta Tresize (Jim), younger sister Elizabeth Brown (Jay) and younger brother David Young (Brenda) along with many loving nieces and nephews. She is also preceded in death by her loving husband, Jan, parents Jack and Nora Young, and younger brother John "Jackie" Young.
