Esther was born on August 9, 1917 in Bowers Mill, MO, the youngest of five children. At age 5, she and her family moved to Sarcoxie, MO where she lived until graduating from high school in 1935. On her nineteenth birthday, she moved to Los Angeles, CA and went to work in a retail store. On New Year's Eve, 1936, she attended a dance and met the man who became the love of her life, Joseph (Joe) D. Doering. Marrying on July 26, 1937; the couple raised two children, Patricia Joan (Doering) Greenfield and Joseph Dennis Doering.
Joe and Esther owned and operated a jewelry store for a number of years in Los Angeles, first on Avalon Boulevard and later at Five Points on Daly Street in Lincoln Heights.
The couple and their children spent a summer in Central Valley (now Shasta Lake City) in 1948 and moved there permanently in 1949, operating a watch repair shop and jewelry store in several locations both in Redding and Shasta Lake City. Later they extended their inventory to include Joe's love of Antiques.
After Joe's illness in 1968 from a stroke and his subsequent death in 1975, Esther worked for Sears, first in the old catalog store and then at the new store in the Mount Shasta Mall, finally retiring from there in 1983.
Esther was a long time active member of Shasta Dam Methodist Church, since renamed Shasta Lake United Methodist Church. Over the years, she served the church in many different capacities: as a trustee, secretary of the Administrative Board of the church and treasurer. She also sang in the choir.
