Alice Withrow Shelton, 90, passed away on February 9, 2013 at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation-Canyonwood. Alice was a lifelong resident of Shasta County. She and her twin sister, May, were born to James Everett and May (Lucas) Withrow on January 7, 1923 at the family farm in the Churn Creek Bottom. Alice was a devoted and caring sister to May and their seven brothers: Everett James, Raymond William (Bill), Harold Paul (Jack), Richard Lucas (Dick), James E. and Robert R.
Alice grew up in the Redding area, where she attended local schools; she graduated from Shasta High School in 1942. She and her sister May were talented athletes, and Alice continued to play women's softball even after she was married and had children. In December 1941, Alice married Robert S. (Bob) Conner, with whom she had 3 children, Robert R., James J., and Alice M. Alice and Bob ranched in the Anderson and Shingletown areas. After they divorced, Alice sold the Manton ranch and began her career with JC Penney's, where she worked until her retirement in 1984.
In 1983 Alice married Clyde Shelton, who proved to be a wonderful grandpa to Alice's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They enjoyed traveling with their camp trailer and spending time at Redwood Trails in Humboldt County. Clyde passed away in 1999.
Alice had an outgoing personality, was a good cook and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Family gatherings at Thanksgiving were a longstanding tradition.
Alice's parents, brothers and two sons preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Alice Domerese and husband Jim of Redding; four grandchildren: Camdena Womack of Chico, Thomas Conner of Sacramento, Ronald Conner of Redwood Valley, California, and Dominique Jarl of Frankfurt, Germany; four great-grandchildren: Cassandra and Tanner Horn of Chico, Jessica and Jamie Conner of Redwood Valley, with her fifth great-grandchild due anyday; her sister, May Ball of Sacramento; three daughters-in-law: Betty Matthews of Redwood Valley, Darlene Conner of Covelo, and Kristina Conner of Redding; companion, Don Irwin of Redding and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a chapel service at Lawncrest Chapel in Redding on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Alice will be buried with Clyde.
