2023. She was born to Lewis and Mable Way on January 8, 1931, in Porterville, CA. She had
two older brothers and a twin brother. Her birth mother passed at a very young age and her dad
remarried. This was the woman mom knew as “mom.” On February 5, 1949 she married Winfred
(Red) Harris in Willits, CA. They had three girls. Paula the first child died at six months. Their
second daughter Charlotte was born Dec. 30, 1951 and Diane the youngest daughter was born
April 19, 1954. Diane passed in February 2023. In 1955, Roberta and Red moved their family to
Gerber, CA. It was just a year later they moved to Red Bluff, CA where she lived until her
passing.
Roberta was a stay at home mom, some would say a single parent since her husband was a long
haul truck driver. She always kept a tidy and clean house. She always made sure there were three
meals a day. One special memory her family shares was Roberta’s desire to feed them. Always
asking if they were hungry or telling them they should eat something because it would make
them feel better. She taught her girls how to sew and clean. She enjoyed spending time with the
lady neighbors’ especially when they would curl and style each other’s hair.
Roberta went to work at the Flamingo Hotel as a maid when the girls were in high school. The
hours were great because she was able to be home after school. Her next job was as a retail clerk
for a woman’s dress store. It was during this time that her first grandchild was born and her
husband passed away. Her longest employment was with Wells Fargo Bank as a teller, retiring in
1988. She made life long friends everywhere she worked. Most of whom she had contact with
up until her death.
After being a widow for 6 years she met and married Bob Taber in 1979. Bob brought a sense of
adventure and lots of laughter to Roberta’s life. She learned to ride Harley motorcycles and they
traveled and camped with friends. They bought a fifth wheel and traveled to Oregon and Arizona
to see family and friends. She learned to square dance and joined a square dance group. She
spent years volunteering at the Hope Chest and was a member of the Red Hat Club.
When Bob passed in 2008, Roberta stayed very involved with her family. Always willing to help
with babysitting grandchildren and great grandchildren. She made a friend whom she traveled
with on Mt. Lassen Motor Transit. They took a cruise to Hawaii, and visited extended family for
many years. They shared a love for dogs always taking them wherever they went. Mom loved all
the cats and dogs she had, especially Cocobelle. Cocobelle was devoted to her and they spent
many hours just hanging out sitting in her recliner. Cocobelle was very spoiled and very much in
charge of how things were done. Roberta was also a courageous breast cancer survivor.
Roberta is survived by Charlotte her daughter and son-in-law Larry. Grandchildren Mark, Sean
(Sarah), Dru (Heidi), Natalie (Kenny) and Dana (Lee). Her second oldest grandson Ryan passed
in June 2023. She was also blessed with nine great grandchildren.
It’s hard to say goodbye but we are thankful for the many years we had to make wonderful
memories. We know she’s at peace and enjoying the company of those who passed before her.
The family will be having a Celebration of Life ceremony in October, date to be determined.
