Lynn "Joe" (Pop Pop) Hine, 78, of Birdsboro, passed away at home on September 30, 2024, with his family and friends by his side during his final days. Born in Reading, PA on June 6, 1946, Joe was one of five children—Charles, Gertrude, Kathleen, and Keith— to the late Charles Jacob and Edith Mae (Hahn) Hine.
After earning his GED, he dedicated 40 years as a Shipping and Receiving Supervisor at Compton & Knowles, where overtime became his specialty. A true homebody at heart, Joe knew how to balance hard work with the comfort of home.
Joe married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Marburger, on September 13, 1964, and for 60 years, he found endless joy in lovingly driving her crazy. If there was a way to get her riled up, Joe found it—and enjoyed every minute of it. Together, they built a family, raising two sons, Jeffrey Charles and Todd Mitchell, but Joe’s real treasures? His grandkids.
And oh, those grandkids—Shea (Chandler), Seth (Brenna), Jordan (Alec Ridings), Hayley, and Stacey Hine—they were the lights of his life. If you knew Joe, you knew he was all in when it came to grandparenting. Whether it was getting his nails painted during salon sessions, tearing up the sidewalks in a Barbie Jeep, racing bikes around the block, or dominating the Slip ‘n Slide, Pop Pop knew how to bring the fun. His grandkids were the lucky ones who got to witness his playful side in all its glory.
A fierce fan of all things Philadelphia sports, Joe spent countless afternoons cheering (and yelling) at the Eagles and Phillies, often alongside his sons and grandsons. In addition to his Philly sports obsession, Joe also enjoyed watching NASCAR, cop shows, and his ultimate guilty pleasure: Impractical Jokers —because nothing beats watching friends prank each other while he plotted his own mischief from the couch!
Joe was a top notch jokester and fierce competitor, never one to sugarcoat anything—he called it like he saw it. In his mind, if you weren’t first, you were last—because, let’s be honest, Ricky Bobby had a point. Joe leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, laughter and a “no-holds-barred” attitude toward life that will inspire generations to come. He will be missed by all blessed enough to have known him. May he rest in eternal peace.
Joe's spirit will be carried on by his beloved wife of 60 years, Sandra; two sons: Jeff (wife Vikki Curtis-Wellings), of St. Simons Island, GA, and Todd (wife Tracy Harst), of Reading, PA. He also leaves behind his sister Kathleen Bitler, of Gibraltar, PA; sister-in-law Judy Marburger, of Gibraltar, PA; five grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews to cherish his memory.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his three siblings Charles Hine, Gertrude Blood and Keith Hine.
Graveside service for Joe will be held Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 12:30 PM at Forest Hills Memorial Park, 390 W. Neversink Rd., Reading, PA 19606. Attendees are kindly asked to gather at the cemetery entrance by 12:15 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joe's memory may be made to Berks County Animal Rescue League, 58 Kennel Rd., Birdsboro, PA 19508, because Joe had a soft spot for the animals who, just like him, weren’t afraid to show their true colors.
