Gwendolyn Fay “Totsie” Walker-Huckstep, 63, born October 13, 1960 to the late Garvis and Ethel (Benson) Walker of Reading, Pennsylvania, transitioned March 1, 2024. Gwen entered the world of eternal peace to a land that is free from sickness, sorrow, pain and suffering. She leaves to cherish husband, Charles K. Huckstep, Lake Wynonah, PA; Daughter, Troye A. (Chris) Vigo, 3 grandchildren Ethel MacKenzie Walker, Nigel Kingsley Walker, Sebastian Banks Vigo, stepson Dravon Sligh (Celese), Aliquippa, PA, and brother-in-law Gregory Huckstep (Paulette), Bowie, MD. She was preceded in death by son, Evan P. Walker.
It has been appointed that man must die, and after death, judgment. The Lord has told us “...be ye also ready for ye to know not the hour that the Son of man cometh.” Gwen took note of this early on in her life when she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and united with Saint John Baptist Church. She later recommitted herself back to Saint John Missionary Baptist Church and served on the Usher Board.
Gwen graduated from Reading Senior High School in 1978. She continued her education at Lincoln University, later obtaining her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Alvernia University. Gwen began her career early in the insurance industry, she worked over 35 years in the industry, last working as a Senior Underwriter in 2022. Gwen was also involved with the Foster Care Program for several years. This is where she met her spouse. On April 12th, 2008 Gwen was united in Holy Matrimony to Charles K. Huckstep of Aliquippa, PA.
Affectionately known as Totsie, anyone who remembers her in her early years knew her as Reading Iron Playground’s “bully.” So, if you heard the name “Totsie”, you knew it was “Greg’s sister and to look out.” If you met “Gwen” later in life, you met a more reserved, conscientious, hard worker who, behind her stern exterior, was intelligent, giving, kind, and loving. Gwen took to heart being a best friend. She loved her two best friends Rhonda Branford and Jeanette Buchanon. She also spoiled her “birthday twins” Lexi and Ernest Piper. In addition, she had an immense love for jazz, cruises and of course, shopping.
She was the sixth of eight children. Carolyn F. Walker-Stafford (deceased), Dr. Theresa Walker-Twine (Reading, PA), Denson M. Walker of York, PA, Garvis B. Walker (Rochelle) of York, PA Gregory Walker (Lyndoll) of Greenbelt, MD, Crystal Walker Kouyate of Reading, Sheila M. Walker of Raleigh, NC, Andrea Reber, of Reading, in addition to her siblings, niece, Tiffany R. Walker of Pikesville, MD and nephew, Devin Walker (Ivy) of Philadelphia, PA who were raised as close siblings. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-great nieces and nephews.
