Sister Rita Kurry (Sister Gertrude Adela), a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, died on August 29, 2011, at the age of 95 in her 77th year of religious life. She was born in 1916 in Hamilton, Ohio, the second youngest in a family of ten children. Sr. Rita is preceded in death by her parents Henry Edward and Appolonia (Obringer) Kurry and all nine of her siblings. Her passing is mourned by her niece Rita Wallen, her niece-in-law Marilyn Flum, and her nephew-in-law Richard Donges and other members of her extended family.
Sister Rita taught in various schools for 42 years: St. Veronica School in Hamilton, OH; St. George, St. Michael, St. Xavier Commerical High School, and Mt. Notre Dame High schools in Cincinnati, OH;Holy Cross School in Columbus, OH; Notre Dame High School in Chicago, IL; Holy Trinity, Julienne High School, Chaminade-Jullienne High School in Dayton. After retirement from teaching, she performed community service in convents and offices in Dayton (St. Agnes) and in Cincinnati. In 2003, at the age of 87 she retired to a ministry of prayer.
Sister Rita was known for her quiet cheerful disposition, her empathy and support of others, and the depth of her prayer life. She is appreciated and loved by family, friends and the members of her religious community.
Visitation will be held at Mt. Notre Dame Health Center, 699 E. Columbia Avenue, Cincinnati (513-821-7448), Tuesday, 9/6/11, from 1:30 – 2:45 P.M.
