Nita R. "Susy" Lewis

Nita Rose Lewis, “Susy”, 83 of North Benton, Ohio passed away March 9, 2022.

She was born in Deerfield, Ohio on June 8, 1938 to the late George A. and Nita R. Burkey, Sr. “Susy” was one of fourteen children raised on the dairy farm in Deerfield. She enjoyed working with her father and brothers milking in the barn as much or maybe more than the inside chores her mother delegated to the daughters. This love of the farm stayed with “Susy” throughout her life.

In 1967 she and her late husband, Leo J. Lewis, Jr, “Jack”, her high school sweetheart whom she married October 1, 1956, purchased their family farm in North Benton, Ohio where they instilled their love of the land into their four children. Sons, Leo J Lewis, III, North Benton, Ohio, Vernon M. Lewis, and wife Linda of Tampa, FL, Daniel M. Lewis, (deceased), formerly of North Benton and Wendy S. Lewis, S. Euclid, Ohio.

“Susy” retired from General Motors, Lordstown, Ohio after 25 years of service and multiple employee awards. She started on the assembly line and diligently attended night classes earning her degree and advancing to senior positions at the plant. “Jack” and “Susy” travelled the world together with family and friends. Snow skiing from Vermont to New Zealand. Meanwhile offering paths to college educations to all children and grandchildren. Some were wise enough to take advantage.

She was 1956 Southeast High School Class Salutatorian and continued to organize the annual class reunion throughout her life. Member of the Eastern Stars, PTA President, faithful member of Elections Board Deerfield, Ohio. “Susy” enjoyed yard sales and auctions. Her bid number “4647” can now be retired.

She is survived by loving sons and daughter, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Brother Frank G Burkey, wife Nancy, Marlboro, Ohio. Sisters Phyliss Coss, Newton Falls, Ohio, Linda Salmen, Deerfield, Ohio and Glenda Richards, husband William, Palmyra, Ohio. Along with many, many nieces and nephews. She will be tremendously missed by all.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM with a 6:00 PM funeral service at Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home,703 E Main St, Ravenna, Ohio 44266.
