Leona was born in Jamestown, New York on August 13, 1930. She was the daughter of Charles and Mary Avery.
Leona graduated from Kent Roosevelt High School in 1947 and received her business degree from Kent State University in 1951. She married Donald Brown on May 21, 1949. Donald and her daughter, Robin, preceded her in death.
Leona spent most of her life volunteering, beginning at an early age with the Rainbow Girls in 1947. Later, as a volunteer at Robinson Memorial Hospital (now University Hospital) she accumulated over 3000 hours. While she was there, she was also involved with The Chestnut Society. Leona was active in politics serving as a member of the Field Local School Board, Portage County Board of Elections, Federated Democratic Women, who voted her Democrat of the Year and participated in many other political events. She was involved with the KSU Alumni Association, volunteered for the KSU Fashion Museum and was a donor to the KSU Orchestra Society. Later in life, she served on the Portage County Mental Health Board, and helped with many other organizations.
Leona enjoyed many hobbies including golfing, bowling, playing cards, couples bridge and had season tickets for the KSU football and basketball games. Gardening was also a passion and she carried on her father's tradition of growing beautiful gladioli. She lived life to the fullest traveling in the states and as a world traveler seeing the sights in Norway, Australia, France, Germany, Switzerland and England.
Survivors include her son Dana Brown (Janet) of Ravenna, Ohio.
