George was devoted to his wife of 28 years, Betty, who preceded him in death, in 1986.
Mr. Burkey was a mechanic at General Motors in Lordstown. He was a proud WWII army veteran. He grew up during the great depression and was the oldest of fourteen children. He collected cars and books, loved wildlife, birds, birdhouses, fishing and hunting. His greatest accomplishment was his family and he will be greatly missed by his daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his daughter: Shockey Podojil of Deerfield, Grandchildren: Shawndel Podojil of Edinburg, Shannon (Frank) Pelligrini of Columbiana, Joseph Podojil of Deerfield and Ashley (Jonathan Mullen) Podojil of Deerfield. Great grandchildren: Gabriella, Ciara, Nicholas, Anthony, Angelina, Olivia, Ava and Emma. Siblings: Lovella (John) Jackson of Cleveland, Margorie Monbarren of Zepher Hills, Fl., Frank (Nancy) Burkey of Marlboro, Susie (Jack) Lewis of North Benton, Phyllis (Mack) Coss of Newton Falls, Richard (Elaine) Burkey of Deerfield, Linda (David) Salmen of Deerfield and Glenda (Bill) Richards of Diamond.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Brothers: Charley, Robert, Donald, Harry and Sister: Alice.
Calling hours will be held Monday, June 23, 2014, from 6 – 8 pm, at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, where services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, June 24, 2014, with Pastor Robert Mix officiating.
Interment will be at Deerfield Cemetery.
