Gene escaped the prison of dementia on August 12, 2023.
Gene grew up in Woodmere, Ohio. He joined the Air Force after graduating from Orange High School. Rather than re-enlist, he briefly worked for Western Reserve Telephone Company. He then spent many years working for IBM repairing typewriters. Once those became obsolete, he fixed cash registers and ATMs. Sometime after being mistaken for a bank robber while working on an ATM, he retired.
While working full-time and raising 3 teenagers, he earned is Associates Degree from Cuyahoga Community College.
In retirement, he enjoyed birdwatching, building computers from bare bones, doing the daily crossword puzzle, and watching the Cleveland Browns. Slowly and sadly, dementia took those joys away from him.
He is survived by his children Dan (Sally), Kelly (David) Fyffe, and Susan; grandchildren Maxwell, Julia, Darcy, and Deanna; brother Jack; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents George and Mildred, brother Ralph, sister June, Ron Alten, and his beloved cat Grable.
We thank the Memory Care Staff at Vista Veranda and Affinity Hospice for taking such good care of him.
To honor his memory take a walk in the woods, enjoy the birds, listen to some ABBA, or just sit on your porch and drink a beer.
No services are scheduled at this time.
