Gary Earl Harris

Serving as a generous and loving role model to all who knew him, Gary is survived by his daughters Heidi L. Harris (Cleveland, OH) and Heather L. Popp (Grants Pass, OR), grandchildren Alexandra C. Wheeler (Grants Pass, OR) and August J. Wheeler (Eugene, OR), and sister Jill Basham (Ravenna, OH). Along with his wife Diana, Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Earl M. Harris and Audrienne I. Harris (nee Van Hyning), both of Ravenna.

A graduate of Ravenna High School (’62), Gary went on to earn a Bachelor of Education degree from Kent State University and taught Industrial Arts for more than 35 years. He began his teaching career at Garfield High School (Garrettsville, OH) and finally retired in 2011 from the Palm Beach County School System, having taught there since 1981.

Gary was a constant tinkerer, gifted woodworker, and an amazing handyman. Truly, there was nothing he couldn’t fix (even a broken heart). His greatest love – apart from his family – was taking to the open sky! Both a private aircraft and glider pilot, Gary took any and all opportunities to be up among the clouds. He was an active and proud member of the Soaring Society of America, Airplane Owners & Pilots Association, Experimental Aircraft Association, and the Cleveland Soaring Society.

At Gary’s request, a private, graveside ceremony was held at Maple Grove Cemetery. He will be missed more than words could ever express.

Habitat for Humanity was one of Gary’s favorite charities, and he donated hundreds of hours to the organization in his “retirement”. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends and loved ones donate their time or gift memorials in Gary’s name to Habitat for Humanity.
