Michael John Schreiber passed from this life peacefully at home in Sun City, CA on June 29, 2018 after 84 adventurous years which included 61 years of loving marriage, successfully raising 6 incredible children, serving 32-years in the Navy, followed by another 21-years as an aircraft carrier maintenance consultant.
Born December 28, 1933 in Osseo Minnesota, Mike was the third child of Marvin and Lillian Schreiber joining his sisters Mavis (Weber) and Peggy (Ekmark). On June 1, 1957 Mike married Theresa (Metivier) and together they raised six children; Vivian (Suffoletto), Diane (Cook); Robert; Keith; Jeanne (Walsh), and Caryn (Morton). He was preceded in death by his wife Theresa (2018), daughter Diane (1974) and son Robert (2016). Mike is also survived by his 9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, his sister Mavis, and many well-loved nieces and nephews.
Although born 1,200 miles from the nearest ocean, Mike found himself drawn to the sea, joining the U.S. Navy in 1951. After boot camp in the Great Lakes, he was initially assigned to an aviation unit in Pensacola FL., but he soon found his true calling after he volunteered for the Submarine Service in 1952.
Mike loved serving on subs. Perhaps it was the special brotherhood and shared bond of those who know that either all come to the surface or no one does. As the head Sonar Tech, Mike was the “ears” of the boat and could identify other friendly and unfriendly ships and whales too merely by the sounds they make. Retiring after serving on 8 boats, sailing every ocean and most of the seas, circling the globe 8 times, and cruising under the polar ice, Mike experienced adventures many can only imagine.
He was also a loving husband and giving father who, despite his many deployments, made sure that when he was on shore, everyone in the Schreiber house had the love they needed, the guidance he thought they needed, and an open pair of arms when they were needed. In the recent years, Mike expressed his love for Tracy every day as he took on the role of primary care-giver, nursing her through illness and malady. Job well done Sr. Chief!
Mike Schreiber has secured the hatches for his final voyage. His submariner’s soul is again underway… somewhere… in the deep blue, under the waves, making turns for twenty knots and a pushing a hole through the water.
