William Winfield Scott Sr.

Bill Scott, wonderful husband, father and grandfather, died Wednesday March 27, 2013 after a long illness. Bill was born on June 11, 1926, the third son of Mary and Robert Scott, in West Haven, Connecticut. He grew up and spent his young life in Staten Island, NY.

He was predeceased by his parents, his two brothers, Robbie and Jack Scott and his dear son William (Billy) Scott. He is survived by his loving wife, Maureen, his daughter, Susan Scott Daly and her husband Bob Daly, his son, Sean Scott and his 4 grandsons of whom he was most proud: Scott, Ryan, Matthew and Sean Daly.

Bill was blessed with a bright, creative mind, owning several patents in the field of radio and paging equipment. As a teenager, his love of radio communication prompted him to earn his amateur radio license as well as his commercial radio telephone license. During World War II, he was a field engineer for the US Army at Ft. Wadsworth, Staten Island NY. During that time, he designed the first Military Police radio system for West Point. His business career started as a Product Manager for RCA International in New York City and he later worked as Sales Manager for Aerotron, Inc. which brought him to Raleigh from New York in 1961. He retired from business as Sales Manager of Day Associates which marketed highly complex central office equipment for the radio paging industry.

Along with his great love for his family, Bill loved the Knight of Columbus! He served for two years as Grand Knight of the Father Thomas F. Price Council in Raleigh and eventually became State Deputy of North Carolina. His greatest accomplishment was the implementation of the Operation LAMB (Least Amongst My Brothers) program in 1969 which continues to serve the needs of mentally disabled children and adults in North Carolina. To date the program has raised over 20 million dollars. The Knights affectionately referred to Bill as “Father Tootsie” for the thousands of candy bars given away to raise these funds. In 2002, the Governor of NC bestowed the Order of the Long Leaf Pine award on Bill for his tireless efforts on behalf of the disabled of our state.

Bill’s Wake will be held on Sunday, March 31 from 6-8pm at Brown Wynne Funeral Home on Millbrook Road, followed on Monday, April 1 with the Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 2718 Overbrook Drive, Raleigh at 11:00 am.
