He served in Japan as a navigator in the Air Force. He earned a BS degree At NCSU and a Masters from Duke in mathematics. He taught math at Sandhills Community College and South Granville High School before joining and retiring from IBM. He enjoyed all sports either playing basketball, baseball and golf or watching them on TV. He was especially delighted in cheering on his grandchildren in their games.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Joyce Knott Fort, his older sister Betty Carter and his youngest sister Kathryn McDowell.
He is survived by his second wife Carolyn, who had a high school crush on him. His daughter Ashlee Fort and son-in-law Thomas Zack. His step children Julie Medlin and Phillip Medlin and his wife Linda, along with his grandchildren Valerie, Lexi, Julie and Philip. His sister Alice Ball and many nieces and nephews.
His greatest blessings were his family and he was lovingly called Daddy, Papa Bill, and Sweetpea.
