Thomas Frank Gillespie, 65, of Raleigh, died peacefully Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at his home surrounded by family. He was born in Statesville, NC, the son of the late Ross H. Gillespie and Betty J. Gillespie. Tom married Nadine, his college sweet heart, following his graduation from East Carolina University in 1969; he began his career in the United States Air Force that same year. While on active duty status, he fulfilled his love of flying through countless hours flying numerous military aircraft. He retired after 23 years of loyal service from the Air Force as a decorated Lieutenant Colonel and Vietnam veteran. He continued his flying career as a commercial pilot for both American Eagle and Midway Airlines.
Tom loved playing soccer and cheering for his Kansas City Chiefs. He was a loving son, husband, father, and grand-father. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, strength, selfless sacrifice, and his unconditional love for both his family and our Lord and Savior.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, April 14, 2013 at Mitchell Funeral Home with Pastor Ray Whitman officiating. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
He is survived by his mother, Betty Gillespie; wife of 43 years, Nadine King Gillespie; son, Thomas Brent Gillespie and wife, Karly, of Wilson; daughters, Allison King and husband, Allen, of Fuquay and Joy Gillespie, of Raleigh; grandchildren: Daniel Davenport, Corbin Gillespie, Cassie Gillespie, Bailey Davenport, Daniel Davenport, Skyler Gillespie, Liam Lasher and Carter Gillespie.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Duke ALS Clinic, 932 Morreene Rd, Durham, NC 27705, the ALS Association Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter or the Wake County Hospice.
