“Sure I may be tuckered, and I may give out, but I won't give IN!” is a quote from the movie Unsinkable Molly Brown that Susan Annette Young, 68, of Durham lived by until the very end. On November 17, 2024, Annette lost her battle with cancer.
Annette was born to father William Walder Young Jr and mother Eloise Hocutt Young. Later, Claudia Young joined the ranks of those who loved her deeply as her step-mother. She is survived by step- mother Claudia Young, and sisters, Gail (Gary) Attula, Barbara (Jeff) Jackson. She never married, but her nieces and nephews were her children; Nichol (Joseph) Tate, Brittaney Smith, Derek Jackson, Scott Attula, and Emma (Caleb) Kirk. Her great nieces and nephews were her grandchildren; Alex Tate, Teagan Tate, Abby Sue Tate, Callan Tate, Jackson Smith, Ginna Belle Tate, Ela Smith, and Bruce Tate.
Annette loved a good mystery, and spent her career working at Nationwide Insurance searching for “lost money.” Her second job, she loved even more. Annette worked at Hallmark in Crabtree Mall for many years. She loved the special people who came looking for a card or ornaments.
Being at the mall several times a week also fueled some of her hobbies. When she wasn’t working at Hallmark, she was scoring impressive deals from other stores to provide an amazing Christmas to her family. She would always start her Christmas shopping December 26, and spent the next 364 days searching for the perfect sales and amazing deals. She also loved Hallmark ornaments and decorating her apartment for Christmas. Starting in November, she would begin decorating and by the time she was done her apartment would make Santa’s workshop look empty and drab. Her last hobby was loving and caring for her family, both blood and specially selected.
Annette’s family wishes to thank all the doctors and nurses who helped Annette during her battle with cancer. These angels made her life and those of her family a little lighter with their kindness and concern.
