Sue was one of the first volunteers I met when I became executive director of Carpenter's Homeless Shelter in Alexandria, VA.  One-half of the dynamic Grill Cheese Thursday team, she, with Joyce Douglas, for more than 20 years and in rain, snow and sun, weekly prepared and served grill cheese sandwiches and tomato soup to families and individuals experiencing homelessness.  With a smile, listening ear and well-wishes, Sue brightened our lunchroom, always interested in the lives of those she assisted.  A true angel in our midst.



Sue, you have left your mark here at Carpenter's Shelter through an amazing record of service to others. The thousands of grilled cheese sandwiches you made and served here in some ways also speak to how we knew you -- unassuming, warm and comforting. God bless all the ways that you showed care and concern for others.
