Shannon Michelle Bowman

Shannon was born in Columbus, Ohio, on March 21, 1971 to Dr. Michael H. Bowman and the late Rosemary Shafer Bowman. The family relocated to Durham in 1976. Shannon completed her elementary years at Saint Mary’s School and then middle and high school at Durham Academy, from which she graduated in 1989. While there she participated in chorus and was a member of America Sings. Following high school, she attended and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Education from Greensboro College. During this time the family moved to Raleigh where Shannon remained for the rest of her life. Her lifelong interest in the medical field led her to work as a medical secretary for her father at Raleigh Neurology during her college years and after graduation. Later, Shannon enrolled at Miller-Motte College in Cary where she became a Certified Medical Assistant, which she continued to practice at Raleigh Neurology for the remainder of her career.

Throughout her life, Shannon enjoyed reading, singing, playing the piano, dancing, traveling abroad and throughout our country, and especially being at the beach. She liked collecting objects of art. Shannon was passionate about Duke basketball, Ohio State football, and the Carolina Panthers.

While in Durham, she was a member of Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church. After moving to Raleigh, she became a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.

Shannon is survived by her father, Dr. Michael H. Bowman of Raleigh; her sister, Erin Elizabeth Bowman, of Raleigh; her Aunt, Phyllis Shafer of Ironton, OH; and cousins, Rita Townsend and Michael Shafer, both of Ironton, OH.

In addition to her mother Rosemary, Shannon was preceded in death by her Fraternal Grandparents, Wellman and Ruth Bowman; Maternal Grandparents, Clarence and Rachel Shafer; and her cousins, Mary Ann DePriest and Randy Shafer.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home. Shannon was interred next to her mother in Raleigh Memorial Park.
