Sarah Mangum Daniel, a native of Granville County, died today at home in Raleigh, NC after a long battle with COPD. She was born on March 11, 1934, the daughter of the late Otho Thomas and Maude Hofler Mangum of Stem, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Rufus Mangum.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Harry Taylor Daniel, also a native of Granville County, NC and a daughter, Anita Daniel Kraynik and husband John of Charlotte, NC and children Sarah, John and David, and a son Gene Taylor Daniel of Clinton, NC and wife Hadley and children Blake, and twins Cameron and Taylor.
Sarah and Harry grew up in the same community, attended Stem High School in the same class and graduated together in 1951. Sarah was number 1 in her class.
She attended Meredith College and graduated in 1955 with a degree in Primary Education. After getting married in August of that same year, she began teaching second grade at Knightdale Elementary School. Two years later, the family moved to Raleigh and Sarah taught in the Cary Elementary School System.
Four years later Anita was born and her teaching career was put on hold. Three years after that a son, Gene came along and she spent the rest of her life taking care of the family. When asked if she worked or was retired, she would simply reply, “neither, I’m just unemployed”.
She was extremely serious about her volunteer work and was very active in the Woman’s Club of Raleigh and served on many of it’s Boards as well as two years as it’s President. She was also active in the NC State University Woman’s Club where she served for years as auditor.
She was a lifetime supporter of Meredith College and the many activities of the Meredith College Alumnae Association Scholarship Program with her energy, her talents and her gifts. She and her family were all members of Edenton Street United Methodist Church.
Her DAR activities were very important to her also, especially those supporting Crossnore School and its scholarship program. She also served several years as Docent in the North Carolina Governor’s Mansion, conducting tours for special groups that visited the Mansion.
She belonged to several bridge clubs that met weekly and made many lifetime friends around the bridge table and she enjoyed these weekly sessions with these very special people.
The family wishes to thank friends for the many notes of concern she received and the untold hours of support given by her caregivers over these past months. Our entire family will always be grateful for the time and efforts of this special group of people. So to Pam, Hattie, LaKesha, Ruth, Judy, Annette, Stacy, Carolyn and her special nurse Debbie we can only say thanks for your devoted service that provided comfort and peace of mind to Sarah day and night during her illness.
A special thanks to Polly Addison, RN and her staff of Transitions LifeCare for the very caring way in which they attended Sarah during these last few weeks. Your service improved her quality of life tremendously, for which the family will always be grateful.
A memorial service honoring the life of Sarah Mangum Daniel will be held on Saturday the 7th of June at 2:00 0’clock in the afternoon at Edenton Street United Methodist Church, 228 West Edenton Street.
Family will receive friends at a reception following the service in the Chapel Annex. A private burial in the family plot in Oxford will be held at a later date.
The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Woman’s Club of Raleigh Scholarship fund, 3300 Woman’s Club Drive, Raleigh, NC 27612, to the Meredith College Scholarship fund, 3800 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27607.
