As I was saying before beimg imterrupted and losing my prior entry,  I knew Pretlow from 1971-to 1976 or so. I knew him as a gentle, generous and upbeat soul who was instrumental in getting myself and my roommate at the time to pursue our nascent interest in becoming rock ‘n’ roll musicians.  Although ultimately it didn’t work out, that decision led to eventually finding and marryng my wife , for which I am eternally grateful. I just wish he was still here so I could thank him in person.  I miss his goofy sense of humor, his positive energy and his unfailing devotion to making music. Rest easy, brother.

I can still see Pretlow  as he turned to walked to the "Snug Harbor" merchant marine retirement community building.    He enjoyed repairing that old slate roof, and visiting their kitchen.
There was a smile on my face that morning and on his.  Though he had suffered a while in illness,  he was still good to others.  Pretlow will always be part of the great memories I have of the N.C. coast.  GOD Bless that family.

My sincerest sympathy goes to the Winbornes at this time of loss. Sam was my best friend for about 37 years, despite living in different cities most of our lives. I loved hearing him create music in his prime, and the concerts we witnessed together will never be forgotten. Mostly, Sam's wonderful personality stood out to soothe even the most pessimistic of us, he truly never met a stranger. I hope he is in a better place and look forward to time with him again when I depart here. Thank you Betsy for putting up with me all those years, and I hope your daughters keep Sam's passion for life alive and well in their futures. I'll miss you all.

Sincere sympathy and condolences to all the Winbornes at this time of loss. Have not seen Pretlow since we were in high school 40+ years ago, but immediately recognized the lovely eyes and great smile in his photo. Am so sad to see that another member of the great Class of 1968 has passed on.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Pretlow's (as I knew him when we were in high school and played together in The Chasers in the late 60s) family for your loss.  He loved music, first playing bass then lead guitar for us.  We will all miss him.

Sam was, indeed, a very talented man, musically and with restoring historic buildings.  I cannot hear the song "It's a Mistake", by Men at Work, without thinking of Sam.  His band, "Loose Shoes", played this song for our mom one night in 1980 and did a fabulous job.  His smile could charm anyone and he had a great sense of humor.  

Betsy, Elizabeth, Rosa, and the Winborne family, his long suffering has finally come to an end...and now you all have a Guardian Angel to watch over you and play you some tunes.  I hope you find comfort and peace soon as you celebrate his life.

i had the privilage of working with sam at the museum for many years, he always had a smile on his face and very fun to be around. there were no straingers to sam, he knew everybody and always willing to help.my heart is with the winborne family ,to betsy,elizabeth and rosa his memories  will for ever be with me

My sincerest sympathies for your loss. I have many fond memories of a friendship born in childhood and re-kindled in high school and beyond. Pretlow was a very good and dear friend to me, remembering to keep in touch occasionally as the paths of our live diverged. I am grateful for his friendship and I was blessed to have him as my friend. May good memories bring you comfort. May his memory be eternal.

I met Sam when he worked at the Museum of History and have known him and his family ever since. He was always such a pleasure to be around and it was so sad to see his health decline over the past several years. Even though his body quit working for him, he was always positive when we spoke. I appreciate his friendship over the years and will miss him dearly. The world has lost a wonderful and talented person. Peace & love to you and your family.

Gosh, how well I remember Sam in the batch of children at the big old waterside house at Oriental, back when I was Anne Twiggs!  Surely not this much time has passed, but there he is in his photo, with white hair.  Pretlow, Ferne, and May, I am so sorry to see this obit, and I hope to hear some of his recorded music, as he was your family troubadour.

I am sorry to know of Sam's passing.  Even though I didn't get to see him many times over the past twenty years or so, I did enjoy the few times I did speak to him on the phone.  I know that he isn't in any sort of pain or suffering now.  Take care and I'll be keeping you in my thoughts in the time to come.  Hope to see you soon.
