Roger Allen Gregg Sr.

Dr. Gregg was preceded in death by his parents, William L. and Bessie W. Gregg; his son, Roger A. Gregg, Jr.; and his siblings, William L. Gregg, Jr., Mary Gregg Freas, Joyce Gregg Rouse, and Ruth Gregg Fitzwater. He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Davis Gregg; daughters Cynthia M. Gregg, MD and husband Joseph B. Cornett, MD, of Cary, NC, and Helen Gregg Harris and husband Roland V. Harris, of Raleigh, NC; brothers Thad M. Gregg of Lenoir , NC, and Stewart W. Gregg of Greensboro, NC; sisters Arminta Gregg Adams (Larry) of Coral Gables, Fl, Shirley Gregg Barlowe (Ken) of Lenoir, NC, Betty Gregg Malley of Fairfax, VA, and Jeanne Gregg Hudgins (Jim) of Mocksville, NC; and much loved grandchildren Joseph A. Cornett, Gregg A. Cornett, Brooke E. Harris, Haley M. Harris, and William R. Harris, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he cherished.

Dr. Gregg, a native of Lenoir, NC, received his B.S. with Honors and M.S. degrees in Metallurgical Engineering from NC State University in 1960 and 1962, respectively. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and was elected into Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society. Dr. Gregg earned his Doctorate in Metallurgical Engineering and Material Science in 1968 from the University of Florida where he was admitted into Phi Kappa Phi, the national academic honor society.

Dr. Gregg joined E. I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. in 1968 where his worked included 15 years in Research Development and Administration and 15 years of developing and executing manufacturing and business strategies. His career with DuPont began at the Savannah River Plant near Aiken, SC in 1968. At DuPont he held a series of advancing positions, including Plant Manager, Old Hickory Plant in Tennessee; Director of Research and Development, and Director of Global Operations, Agricultural Products, and Global Sourcing in Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Gregg retired from DuPont in 1998.

Throughout his life, Dr. Gregg was an obedient servant to God. While in Aiken, SC he was an active member of First Baptist Church, serving as Deacon and RA Director for Senior High School boys. He and his wife were also members of First Baptist Church of Henderson, TN and Westside Baptist Church in West Chester, PA. Dr. and Mrs. Gregg moved to Lake Gaston, NC in 2003, where they have been active members of Olive Branch Baptist Church. Dr. Gregg was always a thoughtful student of the Bible and enjoyed teaching many Sunday School classes.

Family was second only to his Christian faith. He was a loving and responsible son, sibling, husband, father, uncle, and grandfather. Dr. Gregg enjoyed drawing, fishing, golf, genealogy, jazz and a love for life-long learning. The enjoyment of these interests was surpassed by the joy of spending time with his grandchildren.

Dr. Gregg was an active alumnus of NC State University. He and his wife established the Roger A. Gregg, Jr. Endowed Scholarship of NC State University in memory of their son. Dr. Gregg was a member of the Arts NC State Board of Directors, NC State University Foundation Board, Parks Scholar Selection Committee, and the Friends of the Library.

The family will receive friends and family on Friday, April 12 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh. The memorial service will be at 11:00am on Saturday, April 13th at First Baptist Church, 99 Salisbury St, Raleigh, followed by internment at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh.
