Dr. Moseley was born March 22, 1930 in Bluefield, WV, to the late James Bruce and Lena Galloway Moseley. He graduated from high school at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. Because of the profoundly positive impact his Exeter experience had on him, he continued to support the school and its students enthusiastically throughout his life, receiving the esteemed Founders Day Award as recognition for his service in 1985.
Dr. Moseley received a BS in Chemistry from Duke University in 1953. He continued on to receive his MD at Duke and trained there for his residency in Pediatrics. It was during his residency when he met his good friend and co-resident, Dr. Nelle Strozier. Romance grew from that friendship, and they began dating when she moved to Maryland for a teaching and research program at Johns Hopkins University, and he began service in the US Army as a captain stationed in Georgia.
Following a year serving as Chief Resident of Pediatrics at Duke, Dr. Moseley moved to Raleigh in 1962 to start his own pediatric practice. He married Dr. Strozier on the morning of July 5, 1962 in Duke Chapel.
Dr. Moseley’s kind and gentle personality was a perfect match for a 23 year career in pediatrics. In 1984, he retired his practice and began work in the NC State University Student Health Center from which he retired in 1995.
Dr. Moseley was an active member of North Raleigh United Methodist Church since the early seventies serving on various committees and teaching Sunday school. In retirement, he continued to focus on helping others by working with Meals on Wheels and leading the Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network efforts of NRUMC for years. With a love for learning, he also spent time back at Duke taking classes. Other favorite activities of Dr. Moseley’s during retirement included vacationing with his six grandchildren and traveling with his wife, brother and sister-in-law across the United States and Canada.
Dr. Moseley is survived by his wife, Nelle Moseley; son Walton Moseley, MD and wife Susan Moseley of Charleston, SC; daughter Nelle Schantz and husband Stuart Schantz of Raleigh; and grandchildren Zach Kuthe, Katie, Walton and Elizabeth Moseley, and Elle and Samantha Schantz.
A Celebration of Dr. Moseley’s life will be held Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at 2:00 pm at North Raleigh United Methodist Church, 8501 Honeycutt Rd., Raleigh NC 27615. His family will receive friends following the service at the church.
