Pinehurst, NC – Robert Baker ”Bobby” Lollar, age 79, passed away July 10, 2022 at Moore Regional Hospital’s Reid Hearth Center after a long battle with heart failure complications. Bobby was born February 27, 1943 in Meridian, MS to the late Howard William Lollar, and Bessie Maud Baker Lollar, of Birmingham, Al.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, RaeAnne Kenderdine Lollar: brothers, Howard William “Bill” Lollar, Jr. of Butte, MT, Jeffrey Lollar of Birmingham, AL; sister, Lisa Lollar Meier,(Tim) of Pittsburgh, PA; daughter, Diana L. Lollar-Hernandez, (Lino), of Youngsville,NC; son, David Christopher Lollar, (Katrina), of Pinehurst, NC; grandchildren, Kaila and Keira Hernandez: and nephews and nieces, Phillip, Michael, David, Kate, Dan, Michael and Matthew; Bobby is also survived by his cousin, Gloria Duncan of Carson City, NV.
After graduating from Ensley High School in Birmingham,Al, Bobby received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Auburn University. He was employed by IBM in 1967 as an Electrical Engineer, he was a contractor with Nasa during his employment with IBM between 1967-1977 working on the Apollo missions on the propulsion console. He organized and was the first President of the Alabama Solar Energy Association and built a Solar Energy model house, Solar Energy Recorder and Sunfall Monitor for gathering data on Solar energy and published papers on it. Also during his IBM career he worked on programming ATM machines and Robotics as well as being a Safety Engineer, retiring in 1997. Bobby was also a professor of Engineering at UNCC.
Between 1963 and 1970 he battled Synovial Sarcoma which is a rare cancer three times. He actually worked on his thesis while he was hospitalized. He used this experience as a testimony to his faith in God and helped others by being a member of Stephen’s ministry working in the church with other people who had cancer and helping them. He also has served as an Elder and a Deacon in churches he was a member of, as well as being a Disciple.
Bobby enjoyed Boy Scouts with his son, Indian Princess with his daughter, baking with grandchildren, traveling, old cars, 50’s music, camping, fishing, and did genealogy research with his wife on their family for over 50 years and was the President of Lawler-Lollar Genealogical society.
A funeral service was held on Saturday July 16, 2022 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home, Raleigh. Officiating was Rev. Tom Watkins and Rev. Trey Martin. Entombment followed in Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum. A link to the video of services can be found below under DONATIONS.
