Robert Peele Kennedy died at that the age of 98. He was a Raleigh native having been born March 26, 1924 at the family home 3306 Hillsborough Street. His father was the late James Matthew Kennedy, architect of Raleigh and his mother the late Florence Kennedy. He was also the great-grandson of Dr. John Bryon Kennedy of Goldsboro.
Bob graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1943. He served three years in World War ll. He completed flight combat training in Grumman Avenger Torpedo Planes, earning his air wings. He was assigned to the aircraft carrier Bunker Hill. After his discharged he married Clarice Elizabeth Woolard. Theirs has been a marriage of seventy five years.
In 1951, Bob graduated from NC State College with a major in Textile Synthetics and a minor in Textile Manufacturing.
Bob joined Edenton Street United Methodist as a young boy.
Bob was a sportsman and as young man, was an excellent tennis player and golfer. He loved nature and was as avid hunter and fisherman. For many years he and Clarice enjoyed their sailboat, "Windsway", sailing on the sounds of North Carolina.
He was an amateur gunsmith and a charter member of the Sir Walter Raleigh Gun Club. He was a member of the Ole Raleigh Boys.
Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Clarice Elizabeth Kennedy. He is survived by a daughter Barbara Hathaway and husband Eddie Hathaway, two sons Robert Peele Kennedy Jr., his wife Susan, and Dr. Scott Woolard Kennedy, and fraternal twin grandchildren, Hurley and Jackson.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 10a.m. in Historic Oakwood Cemetery.
