Robert E. Gaskins, 71, passed away on February 6, 2015. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia to Daniel Bates Gaskins and Leita Lanelle Simonton Gaskins. He received a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina and took additional graduate Industrial Engineering courses at N.C. State University.
After graduation, Robert worked at Collins and Aikman in Charlotte, NC as an Industrial Engineer. In 1975 Robert worked for the Department of Transportation in Raleigh, NC and was instrumental in identifying a number of cost savings initiatives. He changed jobs in 1979 to work at Northern Telecom in Creedmoor, NC. As Manufacturing Manager, he assisted engineers in implementing Pick and Place Robots and other improvements to the manufacturing progress. Robert traveled extensively for NTI across the nation selling his ideas and marketing strategies to various groups. Recent jobs included direct sales work for Engineered Processing Equipment and being a partner with Pete Peters at the Maintenance Excellence Institute.
Robert loved to fix things and find a better way to accomplish almost any task. He was always willing to share his wisdom and insights. Everyone who knew Robert has some story of a gadget or invention that can be shared. His last years were spent fishing, enjoying the pontoon boat he renovated and taking trips with his wife to North Dakota, California and Alaska. Robert was greatly loved and will be missed immensely by his family and friends.
Robert is survived by: Sarah Collins Gaskins (wife), Leita Lanelle Gaskins (mother), William Scott Gaskins (son) and his wife, Victoria Zula and grandson, Isaac; Susan Squires (daughter) and her husband, Steve and grandson, Austin; Ellen Elizabeth Sullivan (daughter) and her husband, Mark; Kristina Anne Coxe (daughter), David Michael Coxe (son) and wife, Roberta Coxe. Robert was predeceased by his father, Daniel Bates Gaskins and his brother, Charles Henry Gaskins.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at North Raleigh Methodist Church, 8501 Honeycutt Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615.
